Taiwanese Mould Parts Supplier Looks to Europe for Opportunity

Jean Cherng Enterprise Co. Ltd.makes no secret of its belief that prevailing prices for high-quality mould parts in Europe are too high. Seeing a market opportunity, the major Taiwanese supplier is about to launch a European parts programme.

The company has decided to bring out a catalogue offering parts compatible with European standards but at a price level more commonly associated with mould parts from Asia. Its approach to the European market involves the introduction of more Asian notions than just that prices for mould components should be affordable. Carrying large stocks of ready-made parts is still considered by some Asians to be a “sin”—certainly it is a waste of money. Jean Cherng therefore will manufacture parts within a few weeks of receipt of the customer’s order.

When it appears that the European market is ready for this approach and supports the readiness of Jean Cherng to challenge current price levels in Europe, the Taiwanese player says, the first Asian warehouse for mould parts to be distributed in Europe will soon become a fact.

ANCA Tool Grinder Reaches Sales Milestone

Less than 18 months after the machine’s debut at the 2004 Grindtech exhibition in Germany, ANCA has manufactured the 100th RX7 CNC tool grinder for its UK customer Centrax, a supplier of aerospace components.

Said Linsey Siede, ANCA Group general manager, about the sale: “We have many very happy RX7 customers—Centrax being one of them. Centrax researched the machine tool industry before deciding upon the ANCA RX7, and they are absolutely happy with their purchase.”

When the compact manufacturing machine was launched in April 2004, it was greeted with considerable international attention and an immediate influx of orders. The machine concept was based on extensive market research and customer feedback, following ANCA’s proven formula of designing and manufacturing machines that meet the specific, expressed critical needs of its customers.

The RX7 is designed to deliver fast cycle times, high accuracy, superior surface finish, and the flexibility to tackle a wide variety of CNC tool grinding tasks. Its features and benefits are targeted at companies that specialize in tool manufacturing.

R&D; Broadens Sales Coverage

Global PET tooling specialist R&D; Tool and Engineering Co. has broadened its sales network in Europe and the Middle East, announcing the opening of two new sales agencies.

R&D; will now be represented throughout the Middle East by Techno Middle East Co. Ltd., with the exception of Israel, which will continue to be handled by R&D;’s UK office. Sharjah-based Techno has six offices in the region. R&D; becomes the latest addition to its wide portfolio in the plastics, packaging, and bottling sectors.

Reinforcing its presence in Central Europe, R&D; will now be represented in Hungary by X-REM Kft., which is already active in R&D;’s core markets. Cincinnati Lamb Wows Visitors at Product and Technology Preview Event

Manufacturers attending the recent Product and Technology Dayhosted by the machine tool producer Cincinnati Lamb in Hebron, Kentucky, USA, received a sneak preview of the technologies that will be on display at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in September. As an added bonus, visitors witnessed the new HyperMach™—a 21-meter (69-foot)-long ultrahigh-speed 5-axis linear motor profiler running at over 100 m/min. As part of the demonstration, aluminum parts were shown being milled from solid billet stock with spindle speeds reaching 18,000 rpm while exceeding 97 kW and metal removal rate of 7,374 cm³/min.

Attending the event were more than 75 representatives from some of the world’s biggest aerospace companies, including Boeing, Airbus, and many of their key suppliers. Representatives from other industries, such as automotive and heavy equipment, were also present.

After seeing the HyperMach in action, Gene Price, president and CEO of Brek Manufacturing Co., commented, “I’ve been in this business since I was 18, and I’ve never seen anything move that fast.” Brek, a Boeing contractor located in Gardena, California, is taking delivery of the first HyperMach this summer. Brek plans to use the machine to produce large structural sections of the Boeing C-17 Globemaster transport.

Price said that it currently takes about 30 hours to produce three of the 6.6-meter-long bulkhead sections for the C-17, but that the HyperMach should cut that to time down to just six or seven hours.

“We were pleased we could show our customers such a great product mix reflecting the industry’s latest technology,” said Jeff Price, general manager of Cincinnati Operations in the USA for Cincinnati Lamb. “In a single day, they were able to learn about the advantages of multitasking, smart machines, processing new materials, and ultrahigh-speed machining utilizing several new models of machine tools that we’re introducing.”

The Cincinnati Operations, recently located to Hebron, Kentucky USA, is home to the Cincinnati Lamb business unit dedicated to building automated composites systems, high-speed 5-axis machining centres, and other special machines tailored for large part processing.

New Managing Director Appointed at ACI (Europe)

Phil Goulding has been appointed managing director of ACI (Europe) Ltd., the new trading name and legal entity for the combined Acu-Rite, Anilam and Quadra-Chek companies following their integration at Anilam’s Newport facility in Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, UK. Goulding had been general manager of the new firm since it was established late last year.

The Acu-Rite, Anilam and Quadra-Chek product ranges continue to be marketed and supported, with each now being identified as a division of ACI (Europe) Ltd.

GE Fanuc Automation Wins Gildemeister Group Quality Award

The Annual Supplier Quality Award of the Gildemeister Group, Europe’s No. 1 machine tool builder, has been won against strong competition by GE Fanuc Automation, a major manufacturer of CNC for machine tools. Josip Tomasevic, group purchasing director, presented the award to David G.S. Avrell, president and CEO of GE Fanuc Automation, at a ceremony on March 1.

GE Fanuc has established an efficient quality management system, which supports the advancement and development of new products. One of the criteria for the award is based on Gildemeister’s own MTBF (minimum time between failure) system of adjudication. The likelihood of a failure in a GE Fanuc CNC unit was judged to be just once in every five years.

The Society of Plastics Engineers will hold its first European Additives & Colors ConferenceFebruary 19–20, 2003, in Antwerp, Belgium. The conference will be organized by and for professionals concerned with all aspects of plastics taking benefit from modifiers, additives, colors, dyes, and pigments. External Cylindrical Grinder Designed for High Performance

he high-performance S32cnc external cylindrical grinder is a new addition to the Studer line of United Grinding Technologies Inc.The S32cnc is described as having “chameleon-like” properties in that it addresses a diversity of applications and can be tailored to match today’s fluctuating production demands.

This is possible due to a number of unique capabilities: an x-axis which may be arranged for angular infeeding (wheel at 30º) or infeed grinding on the left or right (wheel at 0º). This permits the machine to process very basic, straightforward workpieces or highly complex pieces. In a standard configuration, with the grinding wheel on the right and a between-centers distance of 400 mm, the S32cnc is well suited for grinding small- to average-size cylindrical workpieces. An optional C-axis permits ultraprecise form grinding routines for tooling and thread grinding. Hydrostatic guideways on the x-axis permit extremely rapid traverse rates with minimal axis lag.

Arranged for high-speed grinding (with cutting speeds in excess of 125 m/sec) the S32cnc takes on difficult-to-machine materials, such as zirconium ceramics or tungsten carbide.

VDI Tool Presetter at IMTS 2002 Show

Hardinge Inc. demonstrated a manual VDI tool presetterat the recent IMTS in Chicago. The system can reduce machine downtime during job set-up on horizontal and vertical turning lathes. Machine operators can measure tool position height and length outside of a machine during cycling, thereby minimizing downtime during set-up.

This manual unit is presented as an economical solution to VDI tool presetting at every cell. The small (12 x 18 in.) footprint makes this a portable unit that could be shared by operators or individual units for every cell.

The system includes a 12-in. manual height gage, centerline block, 12 x 18–in. granite surface plate, and a choice of a VDI 30 or VDI 40 toolholder block. Individual components are also available for use with existing equipment.

DEMAT GmbH and Wohlers Associates Inc. will be joining forces to offer a one-day conference entitled “Worldwide Advances in Rapid and High-Performance Tooling” at the upcoming EuroMold 2002 trade fair in Frankfurt, Germany. The conference will focus on some of the most important methods, applications, and technologies for rapid tooling, and on tooling systems that offer superior performance.

“This year, 1,600 exhibitors from 45 countries are expected to participate in EuroMold,” says Diana Schnabel, an executive at DEMAT, organizer of the trade fair. “In years past, rapid tooling has ranked as one of the top topics of interest among those who attended.” The show is expected to draw over 50,000 engineers, toolmakers, managers, and executives from around the world.

It is fun to play with. You can shape it, file it, form it, add to it the next day as long as you do not let it dry out. (just cover with a piece of plastic molding) It can withstand the coldest winters and loves the rain. The longer you have it the more character it gains.

It is not waterproof so no ponds. You can try to seal it but would be better off to use concrete. It would be cheaper and far less aggravation.

You can use it for fountains that do not have to hold water. What I mean is that the water will not be sitting in, just passing through.

It is relatively light compared to concrete so makes great trough style planters. If you have ever wanted to make a “Giant Head” statue it is great for this because you can take your time molding and add to it as you see your statue taking shape. If you do not like what you see, it is easy to knock off a bit and change it. When you are done it will, unless it is 3 or 4 feet high, be possible to move it without a forklift or crane.

Like the natural Tufa, it supports the growth of Moss and Lichen. This gives it an aged look in one growing season.

Once you get started with this you will be hooked. It is great for use in plastic molds, you mix as usual and press it into the mold. In a couple of days, when it is cured, you can take it out and you will have a light, textured looking casting. These are nice when lightly stained, or given the moss growth formula.

Brian Steatham, managing director of Pathtrace Engineering Systems of Reading, UK, which produces the software, reports that overall sales in Europe are up by 20%, in North America by 13%, and in Scandinavia by a whopping 40%.

According to 600 Centre director Tim Hately, “Fidia’s range of machines is regarded internationally as [having] leading-edge technology for five-axis machining, with the added advantage of the Fidia control system and application software.”

The Fidia range consists of the D, K, HS and Y2K Series. The K 211/411 five-axis milling center is the latest addition with a 24,000 rev/min, 27 kW bi-rotary head and up to 84-tool capacity for large, complex injection molds. US Rep. Richard Pombo awards Terry Quashnick with the Bronze Star. Over the past 40 years Terry has faithfully served his Family, his Country and the Plastics Industry. He received the Bronze Star almost 20 years after serving in Vietnam as a Sergeant in the 503rd infantry deployed with the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

Terry started Quashnick Tool, after serving in Vietnam as a Sergeant in the 503rd infantry deployed with the 173rd Airborne Brigade, where he earned a Bronze Star. He fine tuned his skills, becoming a State Certified Journeyman Machinist and a Journeyman tool maker.

Education and training in support of the plastics industry remain extremely important to Terry. QTC has trained 16 mold makers through the formal four year State Certified apprenticeship program, and he remains active with the local Junior College, encouraging training in the trade as America is now growing dangerously short of the skilled workers needed to compete in global manufacturing.

Terry was inducted into the Society of Plastics Engineers Northern California Golden Gate Section Hall of Fame in October 1998. He joins only twelve other professionals inducted into the Hall of Fame since 1986. In 1999 Quashnick Tool Corporation Received the Industry of the Year award by the Lodi, California Chamber of Commerce and in 2007, Terry received the “Industrialist of the Year” award from the Lodi Chamber of Commerce.

Ed joined QTC in August 2008 to manage the molding company and work with the next generation of technology entrenched  customers. He has over 20 years of executive experience in Silicon Valley companies, such as Applied Materials, Novellus Systems, Sun Microsystems, and Saes, and fully understands the demanding product life cycle in today’s high technology industry.

Over half of Ed’s career was spent in ultra clean semiconductor processing, where he managed RD&E in semiconductor processing equipment development, prior to moving into general management of companies in the clean semiconductor processing field and the computer industry. Ed achieved worldwide recognition for his expertise in the field of micro contamination, was a frequent speaker at technical symposiums around the globe, and helped move the industry to PPT (Parts Per Trillion) levels of purity.

In his general management roles, he has been largely focused on business turnaround and new product development. His approach has always stood the test of time: baseline your business performance honestly,  gain an understanding of the customer’s real need, then implement improved business processes and  new product development to meet the need in a timely fashion.

Ed has implemented ISO certified business systems as well as six sigma quality management at the corporate level and uses these same tools frequently in running the business.

CPVC – (Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) is an injection moldable resin used in pipe, pipe fittings, and other injection molded plastic products, we called PVC injectioin molding parts

CPVC is extremely durable typically used in long service-life applications such as plumbing and fire sprinkler pipe, residential window trim and industrial process equipment.

Resistance to corrosion and chemical attack is one of the important properities of CPVC, often replacing metals to provide longer service-life in handling corrosive materials such as aggressive water, mineral acids, caustics and other aqueous solutions.

Because of its low petroleum content, CPVC is self-extinguishing and has a relatively low smoke generation. Smoke generated from CPVC is no more toxic than Douglas Fir.

Compared with many thermoplastics, CPVC has excellent mechanical strength over a broad temperature range.

Plastic Injection Molding Process normally including injectioin filling, Injection pressue and injection packing pressure.

Injection Pressure will affect the products quality. So a suitable injection pressure does a big favor to high-quality products.

Injection pressure involves two stages. The first stage is, inject the melt plastic material into mold by a high speed, this pressure called first injection pressure. We always called it injection pressure too. Second stage is, the pressure we put after plastic material filled mold, called second injection pressure or packing pressure. Melt plastic material’s resistance related to the characteristic of melt, the shape of product and the mold structure, therefore, first injection pressure should be set according to the specific requirement. Generally, the first injection pressure is about 80~120 Mpa (800~1200kgf/cm2).

For the material with high viscosity, or for the product which need high size precision, we can use 150~200 Mpa or higher injection pressure. Once, some injection molding machine manufacturer said he had used 400Mpa injection pressure, but under normal condition, the plastic injection machine which on the market cannot reach this injection pressure.

Too low first injection pressure will lead to short filling. Too high first injection pressure can increase the product density, decrease the shrinkage. But if the injection pressure is too high, flash will happen, sometimes, the product cannot drop down easily.

Therefore, when we testing mold, at the beginning, injection pressure should be low, then improved gradually, finally confirm a suitable injection pressure.

In addition, injection pressure adjustable rang is related to the kinds of injection molding machine. For exempla, for small home appliance, in order to increase the injection pressure, we should choose injection molding machine with big screw diameter. Fig 2-3:plastic molds

Even the same injection molding machine manufacture by the same manufacturer, different screw diameter will has different max injection pressure. We should confirm the max injection pressure whether meet our requirement.

Second injection pressure (packing pressure) is the pressure which acts on material. The role second injection pressure played is, on the basic of avoiding burr and excessive filling, using melt material supplemented unceasingly, to avoid shrinkage of product.

From the effect of second injection pressure we known, the pressure of second injection pressure should be lower than first injection pressure. But second injection pressure must guarantee the material in cavity fully cures, that is, material in every runner fully cures too.
